The rich history of Wells predates the small town’s very existence. Before the town’s founding in 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad, the land belonged to the Western Shoshone people. In fact, archeologists have found human remains in the area dating back over 10,000 years, as well as fossils from incredible prehistoric creatures like the Mammoth. Today, the friendly town offers a walking tour of its authentic 1800s Wild West district, which takes visitors back to its booming heyday. Trappers, explorers, pioneers, railroad builders and passengers all passed through Wells, and today’s Emigrant Trail Interpretive Center is a fascinating way to hear their stories and visit preserved wagon wheel ruts. The friendly town also offers a host of nostalgic events, including its much-anticipated Senior Pro Rodeo and annual car show.
Situated at the junction of I-80 and US 93, two of the nation’s most traveled roads, Wells is a true crossroads of the West. Visitors to the small town will find easy access to nearby Metropolis, an intriguing ghost town. Angel Lake, nestled into the East Humboldt mountain range, is another nearby treasure that offers fantastic fishing and spectacular scenery. The land surrounding Wells is home to an abundance of game including deer, antelope and fowl. Hikers and campers visiting the area will find a range of picnic and camping facilities, and backpacking excursions and trips to authentic dude ranches can also be arranged.
